ANALYSIS OF IMPACT OF BUILDING REFURBISHMENT STRATEGIES ON THE TRANSITION TO LOW-TEMPERATURE DISTRICT HEATING

The decarbonization of the building sector is cru- cial for achieving climate neutrality, and district heating systems have shown a key role in this transition. The shift towards 4th generation dis- trict heating (4GDH) requires not only supply-side adjustments but also significant demand-side ad- aptations to ensure efficiency and sustainability. This study examines the impact of different build- ing renovation strategies and changes in heating demand on the adaptation of district heating substations, focusing on their compatibility with

new operating conditions. A simulation-based approach is used to analyse different adaptation strategies, evaluating their technical and eco- nomic feasibility under varying renovation sce- narios. The analysis provides insights into renova- tion measures and economically viable solutions for determining the right timing of transition from high-temperature to low-temperature operating regimes in district heating networks while ensur- ing system reliability and cost-effectiveness.
