INSTITUTIONAL TRANSFORMATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION: ADVANCING R&I EXCELLENCE FOR THE GREEN AND DIGITAL TRANSITION dr. sc. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a crucial role in driving Europe’s green and digital transi- tion. However, to fully realize this potential, HEIs must undergo institutional transformation that enhances their research and innovation (R&I) ca- pacities, fosters stakeholder engagement, and strengthens collaboration within local and inter- national ecosystems. The INITIATE project is ded- icated to supporting HEIs in this transformation by promoting institutional adaptation that aligns with emerging policy frameworks, good practic- es, and cross-sector collaboration opportunities. Through a co-design approach and strong stake- holder engagement, INITIATE develops tailored transformation pathways that reflect the specif- ic needs and resources of institutions while iden- tifying external elements such as policy barriers

within local and international ecosystems. This presentation explores INITIATE’s approach to in- stitutional transformation, highlighting how HEIs can leverage new models of cooperation, interdis- ciplinary research, and digitalization to enhance their societal impact and scientific excellence. By stimulating collaboration between HEI and stake- holder community and strategic institutional re- forms, INITIATE aims to raise scientific excellence and equip European universities with the tools needed to lead in the green and digital era. The presentation will highlight practical approaches to institutional transformation, including mitiga- tion of policy barriers and collaboration opportu- nities in R&I that can drive long-term impact for HEIs and their surrounding communities.
